School closed for two days
Old Man Winter blew in his second ice storm in as many weeks last week, making driving difficult, causing Oxford Community Schools to close and knocking out power. (Editor’s note: as we prepare to send this week’s Leader to press on Monday afternoon, another freezing rain has commenced.)
Last Tuesday night, in anticipation of the freezing rain/ice storm, Oxford schools called school off for Wednesday, Feb. 22. Due to icy road conditions, on Wednesday night they also called off school for Thursday.
About 700 homes from Oxford east to Addison Township lost power for two and three days. The outage area from Lake George Road, west along Lakeville Road to about Lakeville Elementary School. Despite the icy roads, both Oxford and Addison fire chiefs said there were no accidents reported in either township.
“We had zero calls yesterday, so we got very lucky only one area out of power and that is by Hosner and Lakeville,” Addison Fire Chief Jerry Morawski said.
“We had very little related to the ice. We did assist Brandon Township on a structure fire, but returned to the Township in less than an hour. We were lucky,” Oxford Fire Chief Matt Majestic said.
“All was quiet in Addison as far as police contact,” Addison Township Sheriff’s Substation Commander Det. Sgt. Jason Teelander said.
Since schools were closed and many folks worked from home last week, we asked readers to send us their “interesting” ice photos. We received close to 100 submissions. Below is what we could fit in this week’s edition. Thank you, all! — Don Rush
