Adding the third of four installments to her “Swept Into Destiny” book series, Addison-based author Catherine Brakefield is looking forward to introducing readers to how a family found hope and strength within the throes of World War I and the Great Depression.
“We can learn a lot from our ancestors and what America went through during those trying years,” she said. “A lot of things I write in these stories are true life, they really happened.”
The book continues to follow the McConnell family through a season of sickness, moving somewhere new and, as with all of Brakefield’s books, finding faith. Brakefield said she hopes the book will entertain readers and teach them a thing or two at the same time. Above that, she hopes they find the inspiration and purpose she has found in Jesus Christ, whom she speaks about far more than the contents of her books.
“How did our ancestors go through the worst? They went through the worst with perseverance and faith in God, and they endured,” she said. “This is something we can remember. We don’t know what lies ahead, but God does.”
Because her books center around faith and finding solace in good and bad times through the words in the Bible, Brakefield thinks her books have something for anyone, from a teenager dealing with high school to an adult figuring out retirement.
“If we trust in the Lord, he’ll bring us the provisions to face the future,” Brakefield said. “I can’t give my readers what they need, but I know who can, and that’s Jesus Christ. So, I hope to inspire that relationship with those who do not have such a faith.”
She also knows her readers enjoy the historical elements of her series and that it allows people to understand the period in a new way.
In celebration of the new book, Brakefield will do a number of book signings in the coming months. She’ll make a stop in Genesee County at the Faith Christian Store in Flint on Nov. 17 and will be at the DeAngeli Library in Lapeer on Dec. 8, where she will also give a short talk.
