John Krug joined an elite fraternity last week when the 2009 Oxford High School honors graduate officially became an Eagle Scout during the Court of Honor ceremony held at American Legion Post 108.
‘It means a lot to me and my parents,? said the son of Steve and Julie Krug. ‘It shows that I work hard to accomplish goals.?
According to Boy Scouts of America, only two out of every 100 Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts.
Less than 5 percent of all Boy Scouts have ever reached scouting’s highest rank.
Krug is the seventh member of Boy Scout Troop 108 to become an Eagle Scout.
‘He’s always been there for me,? said Scoutmaster Rich Morton. ‘All I’ve had to do was point to something and say, ‘John, can you help out with that? and he jumps right on it.?
Krug’s scouting journey began when he was in the first grade and joined Tiger Cubs.
Over the next 12 years, he completed all the requirements to continue climbing the scouting ladder from Cub Scout Pack 44 (now called Pack 108) to Boy Scout Troop 108.
Along the way, he constantly faced exercises and challenges designed to strengthen his mind and body as well as mold his character and develop leadership abilities.
Morton said it’s been ‘fascinating? to watch Krug grow and mature, going from the ‘mischievous? youngster he first met to the responsible leader he can count on.
‘To watch him grow into the man he’s becoming has been quite a fulfilling thing,? he said. ‘He’s really a well-rounded guy.?
In order to become an Eagle Scout, Krug, who celebrated his 18th birthday in April, had to complete a community service project.
He chose to design, construct and plant a vegetable/herb garden at St. Augustine’s House, a Lutheran monastery located on E. Drahner Road in Addison Township.
The Krug family is no stranger to having Eagle Scouts in its midst.
John is the fifth in the clan to attain the rank. His brother Brendon Krug, a 2007 OHS grad, was the fourth.
Back in July 2003, the Krug brothers and some friends saved a local teen from drowning in Clear Lake after he had passed out due to a medical condition.
Krug will begin attending the University of Northwestern Ohio in August to study auto/diesel repair.
