Oxford’s bowlers had an exciting weekend at the state championship in Allen Park. Senior Megan Armbruster became the women’s state champ as well as the first Wildcat to earn an individual title. In the team tournament, both teams placed high.

Armbruster, a co-captain, finished up what Head Coach JR Lafnear called “one of the best seasons ever in Oxford girls bowling.” After leading the girls all season, Armbruster made history and became the first Oxford student to become a state champ in bowling.

The senior conquered athletes from Taylor, Flushing and Jenison to face off against a bowler from St. Clair Shores in the final round. Armbruster bowled games of 223 and 193 to take the state championship.

“Megan has worked so hard to become the best bowler she can be,” Lafnear said. “She deserves this as much as any person we have ever had here at Oxford.”

The boys team also had a big weekend and become the state runner-ups for the first time ever. After narrowly making it past the qualifying round, the boys staged a comeback in the finals and overcame teams from Westland John Glenn and Jackson.

Moving into the championship round for the first time, Oxford ultimately fell to Farmington. But, Lafnear noted the historic season made by such a young team.

“To finish runner-up in the state is an amazing accomplishment for such a young group of bowlers,” he said. “These guys battled and fought all day and I am so proud of the effort.”

The ladies team finished the season by taking fifth in the state, losing out to Westland John Glenn.

In the singles championship, junior Luke Acton placed high and became ninth in the state.
