Back-to-back wins for Lady Cats

Extending their number of wins to eight games this season, the Lady Cats overcame Farmington and their rivals in Lake Orion last week.

On Feb. 7, Oxford hosted Farmington and left the match with a 43-27 win.

Though the first quarter went back and forth, the Wildcats were able to pull away from Farmington in the second quarter after improving their rebound game. Going into the second half, junior guard Gabby Dinges got Oxford started with five unanswered points. Her efforts kept the Wildcats in the lead long enough to hold out for a win, even though Farmington would put up nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Aside from Dinges, senior forward HaLaya Cato led the Wildcats with 15 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Mackenzie Methner also chipped in eight points.

Earlier in the week on Feb. 4, the ladies beat their rivals in Lake Orion at home 38-30.

Oxford picked up momentum fast in the first quarter, scoring nine points in the first four minutes.

But, Lake Orion’s bench came back in the second half to put more pressure on the Wildcats. Thanks to the defensive efforts of sophomore guards Methner and Emma Morris, Oxford went into the third quarter narrowly leading the Dragons 18-14.

Throughout the third quarter, Methner and junior guard Sarah Tyrrell hit a few 3-pointers to keep Oxford ahead, but the game remained tight. The Wildcats finally pulled ahead for good in the fourth quarter, thanks to free-throws and strong defense.

Methner, along with her defensive efforts, led Oxford with 12 points. Senior forward HaLaya Cato also put up eight points for the Wildcats.

The team is now 8-4 overall. The Lady Cats will be back on the court on Feb. 14 when they travel to Rochester Adams.
