Lacrosse comes to Oxford this weekend as the Boo Bash takes over Seymour Lake Township Park.
Playing on 15 fields built on the baseball diamonds and soccer pitches, the Boo Bash will feature teams from all around the Midwest duking it out in a weekend of nonstop lacrosse.
“We bring in teams from around the state and Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and play lacrosse for two days,” Brian Kaminskas, Co-Founder of Boo Bash organizer Lax Bash Tournaments, said.
Both boys and girls teams are welcome to take part, and the composition of the teams range from casual groups to organized travel teams.
“There’s a lot of — for lack of a better term — thrown-together type of teams,” Kaminskas said. “There are organized club programs, and then there are the high school or the community ed groups in between.”
Teams can take part in one of two formats, festival or tournament.
“They can either play in a festival environment — and they’ll play three games in one day — or they can choose a tournament option and they’ll play three games on Saturday [Oct. 30] and a playoff bracket begins on Sunday [Oct. 31],” Kaminskas said. “The [tournament] winners get a pretty coveted custom medal with our logo.”
Alongside the lacrosse, players also take part in a costume contest.
“A lot of the players will dress up and they get judged by some of our sponsors [and] vendors,” Kaminskas said. “Plenty of opportunities there to have fun.”
The Boo Bash moved to Oxford in 2010 after starting in Hartland the year before.
“Mike and Bryan Kaminskas do an outstanding job,” Daniel Sullivan, Oxford Township Parks & Recreation supervisor for youth and adult athletics, said.
Though the back half of the park will be dedicated to the Boo Bash, the front half will still be open for recreation. People are also welcome to come watch the lacrosse matches.
“It’s a pretty fun atmosphere,” Kaminskas said.
Games will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. There is no cost to watch the games.
