The powerhouse girls and boys bowling teams took their first losses of the season last week, ending their winning streaks. But, both teams still sit stop their respective leagues and plan to keep it that way during the season’s second half.
In a weekend match on Jan. 26, the boys and girls traveled to Troy to take part in the Tri-County Invitational.
The boys, though they lost in the first round, qualified for third place.
The girls went all the way to the final round and overcame Royal Oak, Utica and Lanse’ Cruise North along the way. The girls only lost to Lake Orion in the final match.
“The field in this event is very strong, it takes a great effort to finish second,” Head Coach JR Lafnear said of the ladies.
The ladies also made history at the event. With their cumulative baker score of 2,552, they set the record for the highest baker round in the event’s 12-year history.
The night before on Jan. 25, the winning streak for both teams came to an end against Harrison.
The boys took a shocking, staggering 28-2 loss, something Lafnear called the team’s worst defeat in years.
“Nothing went well for us… This is one of those matches you just forget about and tip your hat to the other team,” Lafnear said of the boys. “They are very good, but we are much better than we performed.”
Though the ladies lost, they closed the gap to end the game 19.5-10.5 in Harrison’s favor.
“Oxford bowlers did very well in the match, but Harrison had answers for everything the Wildcats tossed at them,” Lafnear said of the ladies.
Lafnear noted the strong performances of Megan Armbruster with games of 226 and 215, Mya Bruno with games of 208 and 206, Grace Meyer with a 217 game, Claire Sandstrom with a 202 game and Savanah Barnes with a 195 game.
The boys are now 6-1 overall and 6-0 in the OAA Red, continuing to lead their division.
The ladies are 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the Red, maintaining their tie with Lake Orion for the league’s top spot.
Both teams will be back at it on Jan. 31 against Royal Oak.
