Boy dedicated birthday to canine rescue

While other kids his age may ask for toys or gadgets for their birthday, Oxford resident Dylan Warren requested only one thing of his guests – kindness.

Dylan held his 9th birthday party last weekend and asked his classmates to bring gifts, not for him, but for the K-9 Stray Rescue League in Oxford.

Among his many gifts, Dylan received boxes of dog biscuits, collars, flea and tick shampoo, dog toys, cans of dog food, paper towels, gift cards and cash donations.

His dog Macy, of the Brittany breed, helped inspire the idea.

“I thought of my dog and how happy he was, and I wanted the K-9 Rescue dogs to be happy, too,” Dylan said.

Although there are many new students in his fourth-grade class at Oxford Elementary School, Dylan was sure to invite each and every one of his classmates, so nobody would feel left out.

Instead of cards, Dylan asked his guests to perform a random act of kindness and write it down on a note.

Some of the deeds inspired by Dylan included helping a new student at school, reading to younger siblings, being helpful at church, letting siblings use their things, helping neighbors, and cleaning up trash.

Dylan’s mother, Stephanie Warren, added this is far from an isolated incident for her son, who refuses to leave home without money in his pocket every day, in case he stumbles upon someone who needs it.

“He’s probably one of the most selfless, loving, kindest souls I’ve ever known. And he’s been like that his entire life,” Stephanie said. “As a parent, you see this child at four and at five, and you think ‘I don’t want them to change.’ And he hasn’t. He has actually maintained that sweet, loving innocence.”

There wasn’t a moment of regret for Dylan, who had a smile on his face throughout the entire party, according to Stephanie.

He spent last Sunday delivering the dog supplies to the rescue and even had a chance to play with some of the adorable pups.

“It felt really good. I felt happy doing it,” Dylan said.
