Brandon Twp.- The treasurer’s office will have a new safe after someone tried to break in over the holiday break.
When Treasurer Terry Beltramo arrived at his office at about 7:30 a.m. Dec. 28, he found pry marks on the door jamb, indicating someone attempted to break-in.
‘I noticed someone tried to jimmy the door,? said Beltramo. ‘It looks like someone jammed a screwdriver between the door and the jamb. I don’t think they got in.?
According to police reports, deputies checked the outside doors to the building and found nothing unusual. The pry marks are on an interior door leading into the treasurer’s office and were apparently made sometime after 5 p.m. Dec. 23 when Beltramo left and before his Dec. 28 return. It does not appear the suspect gained entry.
‘I have no idea how they got in from the outisde unless a door was left unlocked or didn’t close properly, or they had a key,? said Beltramo. ‘I ordered a bigger safe that will be bolted to the floor.?
The new safe cost the township $689. The safe is used, on a sporadic basis Beltramo said, to keep money if a resident pays taxes and the bank closes before a deposit can be made.
