Cagers finish third in FML

A three-point shot by a Lapeer East player with 13 seconds on the clock prevented the Oxford Varsity Boys Basketball team from beating the first place team in the last game of the regular season Friday night.
Despite going toe-to-toe with the Eagles, Oxford lost 49-47. Leading scorers were Billy Keenist with 13 points; Dave Wendt 10 points; and Brad Dugan with 7 points. Oxford finished third in the Flint Metro League with an overall record this season of 7-13 and 6-6 in league play.
Coach Steve Laidlaw said Oxford’s third place league finish is ‘quite a credit? to the team considering the boys started out 0-8 and were hindered by injuries.
‘Near the end of the year they became arguably one of the best teams in the league,? Laidlaw said. ‘They could play with anybody anywhere.?
Oxford now moves on to the district semi-finals where the team will face Waterford-Kettering away tonight (March 2).
