Candles glow again on Christmas Eve

Once again it’s time for our local community to come together for the annual luminary project.
The holidays are great times to be in and around the Village of Ortonville and the festive glow of the traditional of lighted luminaries on Christmas Eve is no exception to the the special holiday events around town.
A beautiful sight to behold, however, a dim project without the help of volunteers.
Luminaries are a special bag of sand with a small candle that will burn for eight hours.
Each Christmas Eve the village streets are lined with these bags and the candles are lit by village residents and volunteers by 6:00 p.m.
Before the bags can be placed on the streets, volunteers and council members gather at the Department of Public Works garage to fill the bags with sand.
Friends gather to put the luminaries together, load them on trailers and set them out on the streets.
Beginning at 5:30 p.m. friends and neighbors begin to join one another on the streets, ready to light the candles.
Volunteers are key to making events such as this work.
There are families that make lighting of the luminaries’ a part of their holiday tradition, and have been doing so since its inception, but there is always room for other community members or groups to help light the candles or clean up afterwards.
Anyone who is interested in volunteering to make another successful Christmas Eve glow is encouraged to contact the Village Offices at (248) 627-4976.
Village residents who would like to line their own street should also call.
Happy Holidays!
