A season’s worth of work culminated on Feb. 2 as Oxford’s competitive cheerleaders took on their final OAA competition of the season. They left the league champs and now have districts on their minds.
Avondale has been a fierce competitor for the team all season, but the Wildcats overcame Avondale for the first time this season to claim the title. The ladies went 225.3 in round one, 218.18 in round two and 287.7 in the final round for a cumulative, champion score of 731.18.
Because the team has 17 seniors, Head Coach Alanna Weber was happy to see her ladies take the title.
“We are so happy that our senior athletes got to bring him the OAA league championship,” she said. “This team has worked incredibly hard to get this title. This team has an amazing bond and wants to win for each other.”
The freshman squad also took home first place and the JV team came in second. This made Weber optimistic for the program’s future.
The week before on Jan. 25, the Wildcats travelled to Rochester Adams. After a few mistakes in each round, the team went home with a fourth place finish. But, Weber said the team “overall had a great day.”
In the second league competition on Jan. 24, the ladies grabbed second place just behind Avondale. Oxford made a “good showing” in the first round that gave them a season-high score of 229.9.
“The girls were on fire,” Weber said of the first round. “They worked as a team and really showcased their best round yet.”
Their momentum continued into the second round and they earned a season-high score of 222.84. The third round also landed the ladies a season-high score of 298.5 to end the day with a total of 747.24. Weber was determined at the time to get that third round score past 300, something the squad will continue to work toward.
The last regular season competition of the season is the Madri Gras Invite, which the Wildcats will host on Saturday, Feb. 9.
