With soil, seeds, tools and vegetables in tow, an expert organic farmer came to visit the Clear Lake Green Team along with some Girl Scouts and Daisies on April 18 after school.

Dr. Fay Hansen or, as she asked the kids to call her, Farmer Fay, is an associate professor of biology at Oakland University, runs the college’s organic farm and advises the student organic farmers. She brought along some of her organic potatoes, garlic and onions along with some tips for students who wanted to start an organic farm at home.

The kids enthusiastically told Hansen about their favorite vegetables and asked questions about what organic farming is like.

Following Hansen’s presentation, Green Team advisor Danielle Corrigan took the kids outside to grow some plants of their own. Using repurposed Keurig pods, the students planted squash seeds that could go home with them.
