A cast of talking insects along with an abnormally large piece of fruit are coming to the high school’s Performing Arts Center as the Oxford Theater Company presents ‘James and the Giant Peach? Nov. 19-21.
Based on the popular 1961 children’s novel written by British author Roald Dahl, the play follows the surreal adventures of James, played by Natalie Musgrove, as he journeys first by sea, then by air from England to New York City inside a giant magical peach.
‘It sounds so crazy when you talk about it,? said teacher Debra Brown, the theater company’s adviser. ‘We just thought it would be fun. The book’s really good.?
Aiding James in this wild journey is a whole cast of talking insects, who were enhanted by the same magic that created the giant peach.
‘I know a lot of the elementary teachers use the book, so we thought it would be a good way for students to actually see their book brought to life,? Brown said.
For those only familiar with the ‘James and the Giant Peach? story because of the 1996 Tim Burton movie, Brown assured, ‘Our version isn’t creepy. It’s for the whole family.?
Performances of the play will begin at 7 p.m. each of the three days. A special 1 p.m. show is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 21 in addition to the evening performance.
Tickets for adults are $5 each.
Admission is free for all students and children as well as senior citizens.
