The Oxford Varsity Wrestling team are sending eight Wildcats to the MHSAA Division 1 State Finals at Ford Field next week.
The Wildcats qualified five wrestlers during the MHSAA Division 1 Boys Individual Region 1 at Midland on Saturday.
Luke Johnson (175) and Gavin Lewis (113) finished as regional champs in their weight classes. Landon Johnson (126) finished in second place; Chase Beall (132), third; and Connor Stokes (144), fourth
Luke Johnson went undefeated with a fall over Hartland’s Colton Lucente, 27 seconds; a technical fall over Walled Lake Northern’s James Moore, 20-1; and a major decision over Saginaw United’s Michael Baldwin in the championship round, 10-2.
Lewis went undefeated with a technical fall over Walled Lake Northern’s Landon Kane, 16-0; a technical fall over Jonah McPherson, 15-0; and a major decision over Clarkston’s Gavin Culloty in the championship round, 11-0.
Landon Johnson went 2-1 with wins over Waterford Kettering’s Mason Holland with a fall, 1:57; and Lapeer’s Connor Haslett by decision, 4-3.
Beall went 3-1 with wins over Walled Lake Northern’s Antonio Proulx twice once in a sudden victory, 13-10 and in the third place match by decision, 6-1; and Bloomfield Hills’ Chase Roumayah by decision, 5-0.
Stokes went 2-2 with wins over Lake Orion’s Donovin Findlay by major decision, 10-1; and Milford’s Griffin Hudecheck by decision, 5-0.
Oxford qualified three wrestlers during the MHSAA Division 1 Girls Region 3 in Hartland on Sunday.
Harmony Gonzales (115) and Cheyenne Frank (120) finished as regional champions. Celine Frank (110) finished in fourth place
Gonzales went undefeated with a fall over John Glenn’s Brayde Smith, 1:48; a major decision over Fowlerville’s Anna Buurma, 16-5; and a decision over Eastern’s Olivia DeLaCruz, 12-8.
Cheyenne Frank went undefeated with a fall over Bendle’s Alexus Wagonjack, 23 seconds; a fall over West Bloomfield’s Eva Zimnicki, 1:14; and a major decision over Algonac’s Sky Langewicz, 15-3.
Celine Frank went 2-2. She had a fall over Capac’s Cierra Helzer in the quarterfinal, 4:19; and a fall over Owosso’s Onna West, 3:45.
The Wildcats finished lost to Davison in the MHSAA Division 1 Team Regional 101 final, 37-29. They won the semifinal against Midland, 57-17.
The MHSAA Wrestling Division 1 Individual State Finals is held Feb. 28 – March 1 at Ford Field in Detroit.
