Around 75 folks – veterans, their families and community members – received free, comprehensive eye exams Saturday at the Oxford American Legion Post 108.
Approximately 10 eye doctors volunteered their talents for the six-hour event along with 20 support technicians and externs in the Henry Ford College Ophthalmic Technician Program. Participating doctors and technicians examined people’s vision and screened them for eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy and amblyopia.
“Eye exams are not really high on people’s priority lists, especially for veterans when you gotta travel all the way down to the VA (Veteran Affairs Medical Center in downtown Detroit). We brought these eye exams to folks and people that don’t have insurance or veterans that don’t want to go all the way downtown. (Those that came) took advantage of this so I think it was very beneficial overall,” said Post 108 Commander Rick Moorhead.
This year’s event was sponsored by the Michigan Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, The Lourdes J. Aragones Charitable Mission Fund, Inc., the Rotary Club of Oxford, Life Companions, Inc., the University of Santo Tomas Medical Alumni Association and Post 108.
