Jean Vallad said she doesn’t see herself as ‘a more important? member now that she’s chair of the Springfield Township Parks Commission.
First elected 16 years ago, Vallad was recently selected to head the group when former chairperson Rich Parke announced his resignation, citing a cross-country, job-related move.
‘I see myself as one of seven people who are overseeing and being stewards of our township parks,? Vallad said. ‘As one of those seven, my biggest goal involves funding.? With state-shared revenues dwindling at an alarming rate, it is crucial we continue to look for alternate sources of funding.?
Grant money monies or possible millage are two examples, she noted.
‘I’m hoping we can continue to offer the facilities, programs, and special events we’ve offered in the past, while continuing to stay fiscally responsible,? she said. ‘Springfield Township is lucky to have over 550 acres of parkland.? I would like that parkland to be here for many future generations to enjoy.?
In order to fill the seat vacated by Parke, the Parks Commission held interviews with five applicants and ultimately recommended Anne Loncar to the position.
The township board approved the nomination at its regular meeting Sept. 10 and appointed Loncar to the Park Commission.
‘It was wonderful to have five people interested in this opportunity,? Vallad said. ?
