General contractor picked for $678K fire station addition

After receiving seven contractor bids for the addition on Oxford Fire Station No. 1, located at 96 N. Washington Street, Oxford Township Board unanimously chose Degenhardt & Sons, Inc. to be the general contractor for the project at the Nov. 12 meeting.
Degenhard & Sons were recommended based on their base proposal of $636,636, which was the lowest base bid. Plus acceptance of alternate No. M-1 for the lower level toilet room rough-in amount of $4,650 and the expanded lower level area in the amount of $36,930 for a total contract sum of $678,216.
‘The process was advertised for bid (and) the bid proposal came in quite a bit lower than what we had anticipated,? explained Fire Chief Pete Scholz. ‘The basement area was totally based on how much money the entire project took as far how big we could do the basement. As the budget came in a bit lower, we increased with the addendums. The basement area is what we ended up doing.?
A 3,900-square-foot main-level addition to the station’s north side is what the fire department is looking to build.
Drawn by the Novi-based Sidock Architects, the plans show separate locker rooms and bunk rooms (with a total of six beds) for male and female personnel, a kitchen, dining room, day room, an area for turnout gear, storage space, an outdoor patio and an office/bunk space for the officer in charge.
Below the addition will be a new 1,488-square-foot partial basement that includes a fitness area where firefighters can exercise and plenty of additional storage space.
Other bidders included Usztan, LLC, Elgin Company, Bernco, Inc., Axiom CSG, LLC, DCC Construction, Inc. and the Dailey Company.
