Follicly speaking,
there’s plenty of hair to be cut in
Goodrich. With that in mind, Christle
VanKuren entered the ever-exciting world
of owning/operating her first business, Get
A Haircut Men’s Shop.
Her sign hangs up at 10229 Hegel
Road in downtown — right next door to a
community barbershop tradition, Ken’s.
‘We have a different clientele (than
Ken’s). We’re an updated version of an
old-school barber shop. We’re modern,
with a new twist. Our shop is enjoyed by
men of all ages. I also wanted to create a
place where parents would be comfortable
bringing in their kids.?
The Men’s Shop opened on Feb. 1 of
this year. VanKuren, a 2002 Goodrich
High School graduate, has worked at salons
in Clarkston and Grand Blanc, working
with both sexes — then the opportunity
to own her own shop popped up.
‘It just happened,? she said. ‘I wasn’t
expecting this to happen so soon. The
price was right and I found a way to make
it happen.?
The Men’s Shop has a clean, modern,
industrial look — from the red and gray
walls, to the stainless steel accents. The
walls are complete with two flat-screen
television sets and old photos of Hollywood
icons like Elvis Presley and Clint
Eastwood.
New Goodrich men’s shop ready to make your look good
Christle VanKuren takes a moment
away from smiling Mike DeMasellis.
A typical men’s cut ($16), gives a client
a chance to relax or rejuvenate.
‘I’ve had guys come in and almost fall
asleep, and others who come in towards
the end of the day and leave refreshed
and ready to go,? VanKuren said.
Men get their cut, then the fun starts. A
wash and condition, hot towel treatment,
neck shave, plus a short scalp and neck
message makes the head not only smell
good, but tingle, too. The shampoo gets
rid of any little bits of cut hair that could
be a nuisance later in the day.
‘Men like a woman’s touch. It’s something
men don’t think they need, but once
they do, they are happy they did,? she said.
Cuts for senior citizens, (60 years and
up) and for students (13-18 years old) cost
$14; kids up to 12, $12. She has a customer
loyalty program, where every fifth
cut is free.
She has also set up a FaceBook account
on-line, where she tells of daily specials and
where readers can write reviews and ask
questions.
VanKuren is planning a grand opening
later this spring — watch for details. She is
excited to be part of the community she
grew up and went to school.
