‘Oxford can expect the golf team to work hard to improve scores from last year because of renewed dedication to the team and to practice,? according to Oxford Girls? Varsity Head Coach Gretchen Gabler.
‘We are focusing on our short game and course management,? Gabler added.
Returning to the varsity team this season are senior’Emily Zeliasko and junior McKenzie Chaisson as captains.
‘We are thrilled that after moving to Arizona ‘before the start of her freshman year, senior Katie Guthrie (and family) have returned to Oxford,? Gabler said. ‘Her return has already positively impacted our team as she has been the low scorer (for Oxford) in both of the (first two) tournaments we have played.?
She noted that freshman Lauren Opalewski is a ‘great addition? to the varsity roster.
?(She is) an all-around athlete,? Gabler added. ‘She is getting better every practice.?
As far as the overall, Gabler said they are looking forward to playing ‘some of the most beautiful courses in Oakland County and being part of the final tournament held at Bald Mountain as it is closing at the end of this season.?
The team’s strength lies in its sportsmanship.
‘We are dedicated to the rules of golf and helping our teammates on and off the course,? Gabler said.
While the league looks tough with both Bloomfield Hills and Troy Athens, which made it to states last year, Oxford’s goal this year is ‘to play without fear.?
‘Without fear of the course or opponent,? Gabler said. ‘We have played in two tournaments and scored significantly better than last season and finished higher as a result.?
In their most recent away match against Farmington, Oxford won 188-204. Chaisson led with a score of 43, followed by sophomore Lauren Yankee (45), who also carded her first eagle on the par 4, number 11 hole. Megan Mancini scored 49 and Zeliasko scored 51.
The girls? next match will be Friday, September 11 at Glen Oaks Park in Farmington at 7:30 a.m.
