The Girls? Varsity Soccer team has played their first and last playoff game of the season.
On June 2, Lake Orion faced off against Waterford-Kettering, losing 2-1 and ending the girls playoff run.
Head Coach Ken Snage said despite the loss, Lake Orion outplayed their opponents for the majority of the game.
‘We had them controllead for 69 of the 80 minutes of play, but their keeper played a great game,? said Snage. ‘They got one on a corner kick, one on one of their best plays of the game and even though we had six great opportunities, the simple fact is that they got the ‘W?.
‘This has happened all season where we hit (the goal posts) more than we scored, and even though we beat these guys up pretty good the last two years, they came back this year and got us.?
Snage added next year is looking good, with between 14 and 18 athletes likely returning. The team will be losing four seniors out of the 23 on the team, but Snage said this year provided valuable experience for the younger team members.
‘If you put a ninth grader into a physics class after eighth grade science, you’re going to see the lack of experience effect their performance, and the same thing happened this season,? said Snage. ‘It’s tough starting out with so many new kids, and we lost a lot of that early season play to weather, but we’re now a team thats on the grow. My seniors played like seniors – they gave us leadership and quality play.”
As a closing note, Snage added this will be his last year as head coach of the soccer team. He’s coached the team for 30 years, and he said it’s time to pass the torch.
The girl’s finished their season with a record of 6-8-5.
