As wrestlers from around the state flooded onto Ford Field in Detroit on March 1 and 2, four Wildcats were among them. Freshman Darren McLeod, senior Trent Myre, senior Austin Schlicht and sophomore Jack Thompson were present and came with the hopes of climbing atop the podium.
Thompson, at 119 pounds, started March 1 with a win by decision but ultimately fell out in the quarter-final round and was unable to fight his way back through a consi round.
McLeod, a 112-pound freshman, fought through both days and took fifth place in his weight class. Going into the day seeded No. 8 in his class, he took down the No. 3 athlete from West Bloomfield to take fifth. The freshman also finished the season as an all-state athlete.
The team’s captain, Myre, fought through both days, even coming back from a few losses. The 152-pound senior started March 1 out with a loss, but managed to come back through consi and won another match by decision later in the day to earn his all-state accolades. He took two losses the next day, but ultimately became eighth in the state in his weight class.
In the heaviest weight class of the four boys, Schilicht went through both days in the 215 class. He took a win by decision and another by first period fall to head into the semi-final round, where he lost but was able to fight back into the running through consi. He finished his Wildcat career as sixth in the state in his weight class and as an all-state athlete.
