There’s a new reporter covering the community and helping to fill the pages of The Oxford Leader.
Her name is Shelby Tankersley.
A recent graduate of Oakland University and a resident of Davison, Tankersley’s
beats will include Oxford Community Schools, Addison Township and high school sports.
Tankersley became interested in journalism from watching the television series Gilmore Girls and reading Superman comic books as a child. She’s still a big fan of both Rory Gilmore and Lois Lane.
Today, Tankersley enjoys meeting new people through journalism and loves hearing their stories. She thinks everyone has a story to tell and is excited to get to know the community members in Oxford and Addison.
While attending Oakland University, Tankersley worked for the independent student newspaper, the Oakland Post, for four years. She worked as a reporter, section editor and the editor-in-chief while at the Post.
She also served internships with DTE Energy, HOUR Detroit magazine and OU News Bureau.
At all of her internship experiences, she particularly enjoyed getting to tell the stories of the folks who were trying to change an issue in their community.
Some of her favorite projects include Detroiters who pioneered a recycling program, a University of Michigan doctor working to improve the lives of breast cancer survivors, a chef running a totally allergy-safe kitchen and Oakland students trying to make their university’s organic farm bigger and better.
Aside from reporting at the Leader, Tankersley also freelances for Neighborhood SEEN magazine and VisitDetroit.com.
When Tankersley isn’t working, she enjoys reading, walking her dog Daisy, listening to podcasts and going to MOD Pizza for her favorite meal every once in a while. She also teaches karate to kids, teens and adults at PKSA Karate Oxford, which is located inside Legacy 925. Karate has been a lifelong hobby of hers. She’s a third-degree black belt in Tang Soo Do.
