For Wealthy Street residents, a new program is just the thing to get a road renovation project running.
Former Independence Township trustee and resident Mark Petterson and his son accepted the first check from the newly created Neighborhood Road Incentive program, created by Independence Township to help offset costs for neighborhoods needing to repave their streets.
Petterson accepted the check on behalf of Wealthy Street residents. The check was for $7,852, which is 5 percent of the cost of the project. About 1,700 feet of the street in the neighborhood will be milled and repaved. In total, the project will cost the Wealthy neighborhood $175,000, or about $100 per linear foot.
The program, financed through Oakland County, will be spread over the total number of homes in the neighborhood for the next 10 years, added to their yearly property taxes. According to Supervisor Pat Kittle, the township contribution per project is capped at $15,000.
The township has allocated a total of $50,000 for all projects.
‘This program has generated a lot of interest with neighborhoods who want to repave their streets,? said Kittle. ‘This incentive is being offered on a first come, first serve basis until the $50,000 budget is gone.?
