Decked out in pink uniforms for breast cancer awareness, the Lady Cats took out Rochester Adams in a 63-40 game on Feb. 14. Adams, the hosting team, presented a $1,000 check to Elemental for its efforts to help breast cancer survivors before the game.
Though Adams quickly took the lead, Oxford came back to tie up the first quarter 14-14. In the second quarter, the Wildcats took the lead and never looked back. Oxford grabbed nine unanswered points and denied Adams any buckets to end the half 23-14.
“Oxford showed grit on defense, denying Adams on drives and contesting outside shots,” Head Coach Rachel Bryer said.
In the second half, Bryer said the ladies were “firing all cylinders” and continued to extend their lead. At one point, the Lady Cats were up by 23 points.
“The Wildcats saw good drives, good outside looks and moved the ball well through Adams’ defense,” Bryer said.
Senior forward HaLaya Cato led the team with 24 points and five rebounds. She was followed by senior guard Ashley Hershman, who took 10 points and nine rebounds throughout the night. Three other key players were sophomore guard Mackenzie Methner with 10 points, junior forward Aleah Dymond with six points and sophomore guard Emma Morris with six points.
Now 9-4 overall, Oxford will be back at it on the court tonight, Feb. 20, when the team travels to Avondale.
