Brandon Twp.- The township’s community park has some new additions.
A modern bench honoring the memory of Larry Roberts was installed in the passive area of the park located at Oakwood and Hadley roads on Wednesday.
Roberts was the public safety aide for the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Brandon substation for nearly eight years, until his death Feb. 2, 2008 following a battle with cancer. Rebecca Roberts commissioned Grand Rapids artist Cameron Van Dyke to make the contemporary bench sculpture, which was placed near the tree library and is now surrounded by lilac trees and shrubs, favorites of Larry’s.
A dedication for the bench is planned for Sept. 12 at the park, preceded by a 10:30 a.m. Rotary Club dedication for another new park feature? a 30×50 pavilion that was the Eagle Scout project of Alan Blackburn.
The public is invited to the dedications and refreshments will be provided.
Waybrant is also looking forward to the opening of the community playground at the park. He is hopeful the roughly 1,800 square foot play structure, will have rubber matting installed and sidewalks completed by the end of this month.
Volunteers are needed to help install the rubber flooring. For more information, call 248-627-4640.
