First winter weather slows traffic, closes schools in Oxford

It’s official. Old man Winter struck early this year. Starting early Monday morning, just over half a foot of snow fell causing all sorts of havoc on area roads and with Oxford Community School events. And, once the snow stopped, temperatures fell.

On Monday, Oxford schools dismissed all students one hour earlier than their normal “get out of school” times and canceled all after-school activities. Oxford Middle School Parent-Teacher converences planned for Monday night were rescheduled for Monday, Nov. 18.

Because temperatures were low and the wind picked up, by Tuesday morning main and back roads were still slick and icy — Oxford students received their first “snow day” of the school year.

According to the National WeatherService (NWS) temperatures were to drop down to around 4 degrees

Tuesday night/Wednesday morning with windchill values dipping to -7. Tonight (Wednesday) the NWS stated there was a 60 percent chance of snow, with new snow accumulation of less than half inch possible.

Mostly cloudy Thursday, with a high of 32. Sunshine returns on Friday and Saturday with highs near 34 and 29, respectively.

Meanwhile, on the roads, Oxford Village Police reported there were two accidents related to the poor driving conditions.
