Tickets are still available for a local event that promises to combine summer fun with a worthy cause. Oh yeah, there will be a pig, too.
Matt Pfeiffer, owner and CEO of Northern Flooring and Interiors, is inviting folks to attend the Luau by the Lake fund-raiser he’s hosting from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1 at his 845 S. Lapeer Rd. showroom across from Buckhorn Lake in Orion Township.
The purpose of the event is to raise money to help the Oxford-based Crossroads for Youth as it renovates one of its existing buildings and transforms it into a residential dorm named the Matus House. It will be a place where young female victims of abuse and neglect can live during their treatment and recovery.
“They are helping some of the most vulnerable people in our society,” Pfeiffer said.
Luau by the Lake will feature music provided by the Oxford-based Three Mates Entertainment, a smoked pig donated by Lockhart’s BBQ in Lake Orion and lots of silent auction items, including a pontoon rental, Detroit Tigers tickets and a custom-made rug courtesy of the International Design Guild.
Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased by visiting www.eventbrite.com. Admission for children age 12 and under is free.
Pfeiffer is hoping to sell 100 to 125 tickets for the event.
“We think we’ll raise over $10,000 (between ticket sales and silent auction proceeds) if we get to that number,” he said.
Every dollar netted at the event will help Crossroads for Youth offset the $620,000 cost to renovate the 5,500-square-foot Matus House. Work began in mid-February and the dorm is expected to be ready for occupancy in September.
“It’s about halfway done right now,” said Crossroads Executive Director Marc Porter.
Crossroads for Youth’s Matus House was selected by Design for a Difference to receive help in the form of free design work, discounted and/or donated products and fund-raising activities.
Design for a Difference is a movement that assists charities and other nonprofits by providing makeovers for spaces they need or use to help others. It’s sponsored by the International Design Guild, an alliance of upscale flooring showrooms spread across the U.S. and Canada.
Pfeiffer’s Northern Flooring and Interiors sponsors the Detroit branch of Design for a Difference. It was a combination of Crossroads’ mission and location that led to its selection for the makeover. “We like to do things as close to home as we can,” Pfeiffer said.
The Matus House will allow Crossroads to increase its licensed capacity for these girls from 15 to 20. Everything will be situated on a single floor so as to allow staff members to better supervise residents and stay on top of potential safety issues. It will also contain special features designed to help residents relax and heal during their stay. These features include an enclosed back porch with a fireplace and a sensory room where residents can decompress.
When completed, Pfeiffer said the Matus House will be “not only (a) safe” place, but “a nice space” that helps residents “get on their feet” so they can “become productive members of society” and “hopefully, live happy lives.”
