Marguerite Lofft de Angeli is one of the well-known author/illustrators of American children’s
literature in the 20th century. Born in Lapeer in 1889, de Angeli was
awarded the Newbery Medal in 1950 for her children’s book The Door in the Wall and was
among the first to be inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.
From now through the end of December the Oxford Public Library will host the Marguerite de Angeli Exhibition.
According to Jaema Berman, who heads up the library’s Adult Services Department, de Angeli created a large collection of fiction written for children that enhanced this country’s literature and described its
cultural diversity. Her body of work spans over 50 years with 28 books written and illustrated, and more than a dozen books illustrated for other writers.
The Marguerite de Angeli Library in Lapeer houses the Marguerite de Angeli Archive, one of the largest collections of original artwork, manuscripts, personal correspondences and memorabilia of Marguerite de Angeli outside of her family.
“The exhibit on display tells the story of her fascinating life and demonstrates the depth of her talent and dedication to her art and storytelling power,” Berman said.
Oxford Public Library is located at 530 Pontiac Street. For more information call the library at 248-628-3034.
