The stage has been set for what some will argue is the most important game in the history of Oxford varsity lacrosse after a decade in existence. A 16-2 first round MHSAA win over visiting Lapeer on Monday night has matched the highly-ranked Midland Chemics against the Wildcats in the regional semi-final, which will be held Wednesday, May 24.
Spencer Petoskey’s five goals and three assists paced the winners, while Garrett Stuk added three goals and two assists.
Dryden Calcaterra had two goals and four assists and Gavin Fritz added two goals and one assist. Robert Rodriguez and Sam Urban each had a goal and sophomore attack man Thomas Wandrie had two goals and one of those tallies might be the most interesting play as a Wildcat this spring.
“Thomas scored in the third quarter to finally crack his first varsity goal this season, but then found the back of the net from 40 yards away with the goalie pressing out to give Oxford their 16th goal,” said Head Coach Greg Normand.
Oxford’s stellar defense, ranked fourth in the state in goal allowed at 4.58, was again the stars of the win. Giovanni DeBlasi made 19 saves and only gave up two goals and the stifling defense of Adam Bell, Hunter Lowe, Tyler Jenks, Travis Butler, Hunter Downey and Sam Barrott shut down the Lightening in all the stat categories.
The Cats also played a strong regular season ending game against a highly-ranked Saline Hornet squad at Adrian College May 18, but ultimately came up on the short end of a 6-4 score, finishing the 2017 spring season with the best record in program history at 12-4, which includes an Oakland Activities Association League title.
The Wildcats only managed single goals from Spencer Petoskey, Collin Grzanka, Garrett Stuk (one assist) and Matt Pullman in the two-goal loss. Oxford net minder Giovanni DeBlasi blocked 45 shots and managed to give up only six goals.
The team is now 13-4 on the season.
