Nearly 95,000 minutes reading? Wow!

Along with their Jump Rope for Hearts Assembly (see Things are just ducky at Lakeville Elementary), Lakeville students also celebrated ‘March is Reading Month.?
Each year the students try to tie their theme for reading month to one of their IB units. This year it was ‘Expressions through Reading.?
‘We did a whole theme with theatre and drama and for our reading night we had the Middle School Drama kids come into reenact books and we worked on expression, where the kids had to read expressively,? explained Lakeville Reading Specialist Beth Delano. ‘It was really fun they had a good time.?
Delano said that each week the students had to bring their minutes in to track how much they were reading.
‘Each year they’re getting better and that’s what we want is for them to practice more at home,? she added. ‘I’ve kind of put a guideline on how many minutes they should read, but a lot of kids go over which shows me they can do more. Maybe I’ll have to bump it up next year.?
A total of 94,345 minutes were read by all students. There was no set goal for the total amount of minutes to read, but this year brought a ‘surprise? to Delano.
‘Last year was the first time counting the minutes so we just barely got 90,000 and I thought we would do about the same (this year), she said. ‘So I was glad to see we went higher and (hope to) just keep trying to go higher each year.?
