OAC awards Joan Brace Scholarship

Congratulations to five area high school seniors, given $500 each as part of the Orion Art Center’s annual Joan Brace Scholarship Awards Thursday May 8.
Jennifer Whaley of Stoney Creek High School received the top honor, the Joan Brace Award, for her detailed drawing titled ‘Fight the Good Fight.?
Shanel Burly from Lake Orion High School and Matthew Sweda from Stoney Creek were awarded scholarships funded by Oxford Bank. Burly won for her mixed media collage ‘Just Say No? and Sweda for his photograph ‘Isolation.?
Also taking home a scholarship was Alex Fisher from Rochester’s Stoney Creek for his photograph ‘Watching the Border? and Rebecca Zimmerman of Lake Orion for her painting ‘Snow White.? Both were awarded scholarships from the Chadwick Group.
Students pursuing a college art degree compete for the annual awards. ‘There are scholarships for athletics and academics, but few for talented young artists,? says OAC Director Lauren Dinneweth. ‘We are proud to help these students pursue their creativity and their dreams.?
