More than 200 students from Lake Orion Community Schools recently visited American Legion Post 108 in Oxford Township.
The students walked through the post’s military museum, getting an up-close look at various uniforms, medals and other artifacts from throughout history. Proper flag-folding procedures were demonstrated by Jim Parkhurst, a U.S. Army veteran and curator of Post 108’s military museum, and Mike Ledford, a U.S. Marine veteran.
Veterans were available to answer questions from students about their military experiences and what to expect during the recruiting process.
“It makes a difference when you’re looking back in history and looking at uniforms from World War II, the Civil War, all the way to modern day, and they can relate because their parents, grandfather or great-grandfather could have served,” said Parkhurst. “It makes a big difference when they can actually look and see what you’re talking about and they can, in turn, get to talk to war veterans who have served this country. It means a lot to be able to do that. It also means a lot to the (veterans) to be able to talk to them and (for the students) to be here.”
