Forty-four cheer teams from across the state flooded into Oxford High School on Saturday for the Mardi Gras Mambo invite. Though the Wildcats took sixth place, Head Coach Alanna Weber was excited to host such a large competition and have the opportunity to showcase her seniors during the team’s final regular season meet.
In rounds one and two, Oxford had to change its lineup after some athletes went out of town. Though the scores were lower than average, some of the seniors who usually don’t compete in the rounds were excited to show off their skills. The ladies scored 222.8 in the first round and 208.78 in the second.
In the third round, a base athlete had to step into the daunting flyer role for the first time the season and let her teammates toss her in the air. Despite the change, Weber said the ladies “stepped it up” and scored above their season average. The team has tried to make its group routine a standout time and time again this season.
The Wildcats will compete next at the district competition this Saturday, Feb. 16.
