In an age when music is streamed, videos are ‘on demand? and books are electronic, it’s understandable that the public sometimes forgets about their public libraries.
The staff of Orion Township Library, however, took time May 23 to teach the students of Paint Creek Elementary the value of their facility, namely in that everything is free.
‘The library works closely with Paint Creek and this is the third time we’ve done a program like this,? said Director Kristin Remenar. ‘One thing we really wanted to highlight was all the great free online resources. No matter where you are you can use the library. Things like Scholastic Book Flicks (online books that are sometimes animated) are available right now online at our website.?
Paint Creek Elementary Principal Lauren Smith said the event changes location from year to year, between the school and the library. The theme of the presentation also changes, with last year being more about games and ‘make-and-take? items that kids can create themselves. This year was more about the online resources and how easy it is to access them.
‘Reading is probably the most important life skill anyone will ever need. The sooner we can get these kids passionate about it the sooner they can take advantage of the opportunities that are out there,? said Smith. ‘The kids were very excited for their forever books, which were books we gave them and asked them to keep forever to pass on to other generations. They also liked knowing they could access the library through computers.?
Remenar pointed out online resources are a good alternative to eReaders as a form of reading electronically. She said while the handheld devices are popular right now, many do not realize they are not required to read electronic books.
‘You read them online for free on our website,? said Remenar. ‘The kids especially liked knowing all the stuff was free. Even kids that come here on a frequent basis were surprised by all the material we have.?
Next up for library visitors will be the June 9 kickoff of summer reading. The even is a free open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. with live music, face painting, bouncy house and access to all the facilities. Arts and crafts are also available. Sign up is possible online at orion.lib.mi.us.
