Praise flows at Bossardet’s last meeting

For the second time in her political career, Sue Bossardet bid adieu to the Oxford Village Council.

Last week, the village president chaired her last meeting and cast her final votes as a council member.

She is not seeking re-election Nov. 6. There are three candidates – Maureen Helmuth, Joe Frost and Kate Logan – running for three seats.

“I was going to come prepared with a big speech tonight, but I decided just to say thank you,” Bossardet said. “I love this community and I wear my heart on my sleeve about it.”

Bossardet has served on council since 2013. Prior to that, she helped oversee the village from 1994 to 2001.

Near the end of the meeting, officials took turns expressing their feelings about Bossardet.

Police Chief Mike Solwold praised her years of “commitment to this town” and “to this police department.”

“Nobody can touch that,” he said. “I love you. We love you. And I know we’ll see you around. Thank you for everything, Sue.”

Don Brantley, director of public works, thanked Bossardet for the countless hours she spent serving the community and for her support of his department. “We appreciate you and we’re going to miss you,” he said.

“I can’t imagine the Village of Oxford without Sue,” said Councilman Dave Bailey

“Your name is synonymous with the Village of Oxford,” said Councilman Erik Dolan. “Over the last two-and-a-half years, I have been honored to have spent many, and I mean many, hours of discussion on the telephone with you. I appreciate your guidance and your direction, your insight and your love for the community.”

Councilwoman Maureen Helmuth interjected a bit of levity.

“I think this would be sad if we didn’t all know the truth – what we’re really doing is turning her loose on the community,” she said. “She will no longer have the constraints of being on council. She will be sitting out there (in the audience), free to say whatever she wants and we’re all in trouble.”

Bossardet wished her fellow officials luck and made only one parting request. “Please don’t screw up my community,” she said.
