Ortonville- Buyer beware.
That is the message Larry Roberts, the public safety aide of the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, has for local residents after recently hearing from two citizens who called the Brandon substation and said men had come to their doors offering to lay asphalt at a bargain price.
Roberts says the men go door-to-door, saying they have leftover asphalt from a large job they did and will give a bargain deal to the homeowner. Often, he adds, this can end in either a criminal complaint? if the homeowner gives the money and the supposed contractor takes it and runs without doing any work? or, a civil complaint, when the asphalt is put down, but in a shabby, substandard manner.
‘These people are operating in the area,? says Roberts. ‘Be cautious when contracting from someone going door-to-door selling asphalt jobs. Contact the township and the Better Business Bureau. Look into their background and make sure you’re dealing with a legitimate contractor and not a shyster.?
