Oxford High School’s TORC 2137 is teaming up with Sherman Publications, Inc. to sell Oxford Leader subscriptions as part of its fund-raising efforts.
TORC 2137 will be selling subscriptions from now through March 10 to raise money to help support the team.
Sherman Publications will donate $5 for each new subscription and $3 for renewals towards the robotics team.
According to Community Service Mentor Mary Reynolds, this is just one of the many fund-raisers that the team participates in annually.
“It takes about $30,000 a year to run our robotics team,” said Reynolds.”Other schools do charge participation fees and, in some cases, it can be several hundred dollars. But at OHS, we do not charge our students, so we have to make all of our own money through different means and this is one of those ways.”
Reynolds also added she hopes the fund-raiser will benefit Oxford Leader subscribers, in addition to her team.
“(Subscribers) will be able to read about not only our robotics team but the other students in the high school and what they’re doing, as well. We love being able to promote both our robotics team and The Oxford Leader,” Reynolds added.
According to Reynolds, the funds will help strengthen the team as it prepares to compete in a FIRST STEAMWORKS 2017 qualifying event March 2-4, as the team competes against nearly 40 other teams from around the state, and in other competitions.
All proceeds will go towards robot production and other team-related costs.
Those who wish to donate or receive a subscription form may contact Reynolds at (248) 969-9948.
According to Reynolds, The TORC 2137 team will also be hosting their fifth annual Week Zero Practice Event Saturday, Feb. 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the OHS East Gymnasium.
The event will offer TORC 2137 and nearly 15 other local robotics teams an opportunity to practice on a full field with other robots before the competition.
