Kim Shumaker, a member of the Oxford Board of Education, resigned at the Nov. 15 meeting because she’s moving out of the district.
Shumaker was elected in 2009. She was the board’s vice president and had previously served as secretary.
Shumaker said her resignation from the board would be effective immediately.
According to board bylaws, school board members are required to be residents of the district they serve.
“I’d like to express my thanks to each and every employee and volunteer in Oxford Community Schools for the impact that you’ve had on my children,” Shumaker said.
“I want to thank the current and former board members for the opportunity to learn and grow with each of you. It has been so rewarding to serve our community with all of you.”
“It’s been a pleasure (working with Kim),”said Trustee Jim Reis. “Through all of our rough times and differing opinions, it’s been a real honor to have her on this board.”
School board members accepted her resignation and will begin the process of appointing someone to fill her seat. The board has 30 days to appoint a new member to finish out Shumaker’s term, which expires December 2018.
To apply for consideration for the position, interested parties must submit a letter of intent, describing why they want to serve on the board, and what unique qualities, expertise or experience they may have to contribute to the board of education.
The deadline for submitting the letter of intent is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29.
Upon receipt of the letter of intent, an application will be given to the interested party. Applications are due no later than 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 5. Letters of intent and applications should be submitted to Superintendent Tim Throne at 10 N. Washington Street, Oxford, MI 48371.
Public interviews will be held at a special 6 p.m. school board meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 6 in the Oxford High School orchestra room. The board is expected to make an appointment at that meeting.
The school is located at 745 N. Oxford Rd. and the room number is 105.
