Soil deemed un-hazardous

Ortonville- Contaminated soil found at the Brandon Township offices at 395 Mill St. was deemed non-hazardous special waste.
The soil problem was discovered when the township had their septic tank replaced last week.
‘We did not have to have the soil tested,? said Township Supervisor Kathy Thurman.
‘There was no official soil contamination listing, but it smelled like gas because there used to be an underground gas tank in the area.?
Officials from the Oakland County Health Division came out when the new septic tank was being installed and told Thurman all that needed to be done was proper disposal of the soil.
Removal and disposal of the soil cost the township $2,132.40 and was part of the total $8,782.40 bill from Harrison Hoe, which replaced the septic tank. The township-based company disposed of the soil at a special facility.
