In their last tournament of the season, Oxford’s volleyball team took second-place accolades by triumphing over many of the teams present. Head Coach Brian Kim said the placement made for a “strong” finish for the ladies.
In the first round of the tournament, Oxford went 3-1. The Wildcats overcame Country Day 2-0 with scores of 25-22 and 25-20, Romeo 2-0 with scores of 25-12 and 25-10 and Brandon 2-0, scoring 25-20 and 25-21. Oxford took its one loss to Seaholm 2-0 with scores of 25-12 and 25-18 in Seaholm’s favor. The singular loss meant the Wildcats could move on to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Oxford again defeated County Day in two sets, scoring 25-18 both times. Later in the finals match, the Wildcats went down against Romeo in two close sets, which ended in scores of 25-23 and 21-25.
The tournament was led offensively by Wildcats junior and co-captain Maddy Weiss, who put up 99 assists, as well as outside attackers junior Sydney Richter and sophomore Molly Miller who landed 37 and 29 kills, respectively. Middle attackers sophomore Emma LaBarge and senior Alexia Kingham also put in a strong contribution, with LaBarge landing 31 kills and Kingham putting down 20.
On the defensive end, senior and co-captain McKenzie Miller led the team, taking 67 receptions and putting up 41 digs.
With the regular season behind them, the ladies will play their first game of districts against the Lake Orion Dragons on Oct. 29. The first serve will go up at 5:30 p.m. at the hosting school, Waterford Kettering.
