A group of Lakeville fifth-graders made their school grounds a little bit greener by planting a tree outside the playground May 31.
The group consisted of Lakeville fifth-graders Jay Cady, Collin Rogers, Bishop Dissmore and Adam Harville.
The students planted a Norwegian Spruce as part of their International Baccalaureate (IB) fifth-grade exhibition project.
Students were encouraged to choose subjects they are passionate about when deciding on a project, according to IB Coordinator Christine Vince.
“We wanted to plant more trees because a lot of trees are being cut down and our group felt (strongly) about that so we decided to plant a tree in the school grounds so animals and people can enjoy the tree,” said Rogers.
According to the students, the tree was planted to reduce the carbon footprint and to make a positive difference on the planet.
“It felt awesome (to plant this tree,)” said Dissmore. “(Our main goal) is getting our oxygen (levels) higher and (growing) more trees.”
“I’m hoping (our tree) will bring a lot of life and it will grow tall and be nice at the school and that other kids will like it,” Rogers added.
