According to Addison Township Supervisor Bruce Pearson, it might be time for the community to think about having one trash company serving residents. Currently, residents have the opportunity to choose their own trash hauler.
“I’m getting an awful lot of calls about garbage trucks not picking up the garbage in Addison Township, and this isn’t just one service, it’s a lot of services,” Pearson said at the township board’s Feb. 11 during his supervisor’s report. It was not part of official discussion.
He said some residents have reported that their trash hasn’t been picked up in three weeks, and knows of one company that has decided to stop servicing Addison residents. Because of this, Pearson hinted it might be time for the board to take up the matter.
“People are calling us and asking us if we have a solution, if we know anybody. But we don’t recommend anybody because it’s the individual’s choice,” he said. “But, someday in the future, somebody may want to look at one garbage source so we’re having everybody’s garbage picked up on one day instead of six different trucks on six different days and some of them not picking up.”
Though the discussion was not formal, Pearson and trustees said, if the matter was taken up and voted on, it would be most affordable if a trash pick-up fee were added to residents’ taxes. Pearson added that a township-wide service would “probably” include recycling pick-up as well.
“It’s generally substantially cheaper to do it that way,” said township Treasurer Lori Fisher, referring to taxation.
Because the matter has not been formally looked into, Pearson said he does not know if some residents, like those who have summer homes in the area, would be able to opt-out of a trash tax.
In any case, he said it’s time to fix the problem of trash not being picked up.
“We can’t have garbage sitting out on the roads for three weeks,” he said. “The animals get into it.”
I agree it is time to consider a single trash hauler which would also save wear and tear on our roads! Less traffic would also increase safety for everyone.
