Dear Editor,
I was pleased to hear that the Oakland County Parks and Health Department will soon decide whether to reopen the Oakland County Fair this year. I know how much this means to my neighbors here in Oxford and the Township. The event begins on July 9th, which is only four weeks from now. I hope the Department’s decision occurs soon and is favorable.
Participating as an entrant in the Fair is hard work. They have been feeding, training, and cleaning up after the animals to get them ready for this brief time in the summer. The Fair gives these kids a time to proudly show off all types of accomplishments, from displaying a school project in the Ellis barn to raising a steer. Once they arrive at the Fairgrounds, these youth spend ten days showing and taking care of the animals while having fun.
The Parks Department knows how to safely reopen outdoor events, given what we know about the virus. I sincerely hope we don’t disappoint these kids again this year.
While I don’t have any children participating, I’m looking forward to attending the Fair this year. When I learned the organizers needed help because of sponsor cancellations last year, I was happy to donate today to help buy awards for the kids. I know the Fair means a lot to our community, and I hope folks will consider helping out if they can.
