They had mentally prepared for a tie, but the boys’ swim and dive team overcame Rochester 105-80 on Dec. 13. Head Coach Jackie Rank was especially proud of the growth the team is showing so early in the season.
“More important than the check in the win column is the overall improvement that we saw in the athletes from the previous week,” she said.
The boys won the three relays, starting with the 200 Medley Relay. The A Relay team, made up of sophomore Zach Beatty, sophomore Ben Datsko, freshman Carson Wolf and junior Carter Pollard, grabbed the winning slot with a time of 1:44.75.
In the 200 Freestyle Relay, the A Relay team took first with a time of 1:36.89. The boys were Datsko, Beatty, sophomore Noaln May and sophomore Cole Bukoski.
Rounding out the relays was another win for the boys in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The A Relay team of Pollard, Bukoski, Wolf and freshman Nolan Johnston pulled off the win with a time of 3:31.08. Rank said Wolf gave an exceptional performance in the race, pulling the Wildcats out from being a second and a half behind.
In the individual events, Beatty kicked the boys off with a win in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:51.31. Beatty also took first in the 100 Freestyle, in which he swam a time of 50.81.
Wolf, just a freshman, also took home a few wins. He grabbed the first place spot in the 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:04.21, which is also the second fastest time in Oxford history. Wolf also took first and landed second on the Oxford record books in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 55.90.
In the 50 Freestyle, Pollard took first for the Wildcats with a time of 23.54. Also a freestyle swimmer, Johnston took first in the 500 Freestyle with a time of 5.09.00. Johnston’s time put him fifth in Oxford’s record books.
Rounding out the swimming events, senior Alex Olheiser got second in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1.03.19. His teammate May came in just behind him in third place. Datsko also landed a second place finish in the 100 Breaststroke, which he swam in 1:05.87.
In the diving event, junior Evan Covert took second with his score of 154.20. Sophomore Michael Funke came in just behind his teammate in third.
The boys will be back in the pool on Dec. 20 in their home opener against Berkley.
