Swim team takes 2nd at OAA championships

Oxford’s Swim and Dive teams competed against seven area schools at the OAA Championships held at Oxford High last Friday. In the end, Oxford landed in second place with 459 points, falling second only to Stoney Creek High School.

Three schools, including Oxford, were tied with records of 6 – 1 after the dual meet season. Stoney Creek was able to hold a somewhat comfortable lead of 40 points over Oxford, which barely held on to a 7-point lead over third place Berkley.

The team is 3-1-0 overall.

The results are as follows:

In the 200 Medley Relay, Oxford’s A Relay of sophomore Claire Alexander, junior Victoria Mc Clenaghan, junior captain Rachel Commons and freshman Ashlee Weltyk took third with a new school record time of 1:57.15.

In the 200 Freestyle, Weltyk finished first with a time of 2:01.41. Other point earners in this event were freshman Sabrina Kurk in third, and sophomore Cailin Griffith in fifth place.

In the 200 Individual Medley, Alexander came in third with a time of 2:25.12. Mc Clenaghan finished in fifth place for Oxford.

In the 50 Freestyle, Commons took fourth with a time of 27.23.

In the diving portion, sophomore Keira Veltigian claimed third with a score of 331.55. Freshman Emma Moore finished fifth while senior Jenna Zeiter finished sixth.

All three girls qualified for the Regional Diving Championships which will be held Thursday, November 10th.

In the 100 Butterfly, Commons touched third with a personal-best time of 1:04.75.

In the 100 Freestyle, freshman Kaleigh Rogers finished seventh with a personal-best time of 1:02.27.

In the 500 Freestyle, Weltyk came in second with a time of 5:28.88. Other point-earners for Oxford in were Kurk in fifth place, and Griffith in ninth place.

In the 200 Freestyle Relay, Oxford’s A Relay of Mc Clenaghan, Hannah Schonfeld, Christina Boydston, and Kurk took second with a time of 1:51.46.

In the 100 Backstroke, Alexander touched third with a time of 1:06.32. Junior Emily Vican came in sixth place and sophomore Paige Hodder finished in eighth place.

In the 100 Breaststroke, Mc Clenaghan finished fourth with a time of 1:15.44. Rogers claimed sixth place with a personal-best time of 1:18.78.

In the 400 Freestyle Relay, Oxford’s A Relay of Commons, Kurk, Alexander, and Weltyk came in second with a season-best time of 3:49.02.
