Now poised to take second in the league this season, Oxford’s swimmers and divers picked up fourth place at the OAA White meet on Feb. 20-22. After this meet, freshman Carson Wolf remains the team’s only representative at the state meet in March. But, some of the boys are just on the cusp of making the cut.
Starting with the 200 Medley Relay, Oxford took third with a school record-setting time of 1:41.94. The swimmers were Zach Beatty, Ben Datsko, Carson Wolf and Carter Pollard, and they swam just 0.35 seconds short of a state cut.
The same four boys went all-league and became the league champs in the 400 Freestyle relay with a time of 3:20.42. The race set another Oxford record and was 0.73 seconds short of a state cut.
Beatty later became the league champ in the 200 Freestyle. He swam a time of 1:47.23 and is 0.44 seconds away from a state cut. Beatty also took third in the 500 Freestyle with a personal-best time of 4:52.38.
In the 200 Individual Medley, Wolf became the league champ and again broke the school record with a time of 1:58.43. He also made his second state cut in the 500 Freestyle, in which he took second and swam a time of 4:50.87. Wolf is set to swim both races at states.
Datsko grabbed second in the 100 Butterfly with a time of 54.48. He also took third in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:01.24. In the breaststroke, he narrowly missed a state cut by 0.15 seconds.
On Feb. 28, three of Oxford’s divers will compete at the regional championships in the hopes of taking one of 12 states spots.
As for the swimmers, some of the boys will head out to Kettering High School on March 3 to try and grab a few more state cuts for relay and individual events.
