Swimmers sink Stoney Creek, Lake Orion, Utica

Oxford’s swimmers and divers competed in their final regular meets of the season this week and moved to 9-1 overall. Now, they’ll be focusing on the postseason and getting more state cuts. Right now, Freshman Carson Wolf is the only Wildcat slated to swim at the state meet.

On Valentine’s Day, the boys took on Utica Eisenhower and Lake Orion in a dual meet. Oxford beat Utica 111-74 and Lake Orion 108-78.

Starting with the 200 Medley Relay, Oxford came first against Utica and came second to Lake Orion with a time of 1:45.57. The swimmers were Wolf, Zach Beatty, Ben Datsko and Carter Pollard.

In the freestyle relays, Oxford took a first and a second. The Wildcats took second overall in the 200 Freestyle Relay with swimmers Datsko, Nathanial Johnston, Randy Puff and Cameron Matteson. In the 400 Freestyle Relay, Oxford took first overall with a time of 3:28.22 from Beatty, Pollard, Wolf and Cole Bukoski.

Beatty again claimed two wins. He took first overall in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:53.20 and the 100 Freestyle with a time of 51.65. Wolf also took two overall wins in the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 Freestyle. He swam times of 2:02.40 and 4:54.23, respectively.

In the 50 Freestyle, Pollard came in first to Utica and third to Lake Orion with a time of 23.82. Later in the 100 Butterfly, Nolan May grabbed first overall with a time of 59.14. Alex Olheiser then broke his personal best in the 100 Backstroke with a time of 1:02.71, which got him first against Utica and second to Lake Orion.

Rounding out the individual swim events, Datsko took first overall in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:03.04. In diving, Michael Funke took first overall with a season-high score of 177.45.

On Feb. 7, Oxford’s swimmers and divers got their seventh win of the season by downing Stoney Creek 107-78.

Once again, Oxford dominated the relays. Beatty, Datsko, Wolf and Pollard grabbed first in the tough 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:45.30. Later in the 400 Freestyle Relay, Pollard, Beatty, Wolf and Cole Bukoski took first place with a time of 3:26.37.

Swimmers Puff, Matteson, Zach Allion and Evan Covert took second place points for the Wildcats in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 1:43.03.

In the individual events, Wolf again grabbed a pair of wins. He took first in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Butterfly with times of 1:49.86 and 54.88, respectively. Beatty also took two wins. He swam the 200 Individual Medley in 2:07.90 and the 500 Freestyle in 5:04.89.

Pollard was also a big point-earner for the team. He grabbed second place in both the 50 and 100 Freestyle races. For his silver finishes, he swam times of 23.74 and 52.13, respectively.

In the 100 Backstroke, May took second for the Wildcats and swam a time of 1:01.89. Later in the 100 Breaststroke, Datsko wrapped up the night’s swimming event with a win from his time of 1:02.19.

As for diving, Funke took first with a season-best score of 166.70.

The swimmers are now 9-1 overall. They’ll be back at it this weekend on Feb. 20 and 21 at the OAA swim and dive preliminary meets.
