Wildcat tennis has played the first half of its season with a habit of devouring the competition.
During its last three games, the team beat its competitors by a wide margin.
Head Coach Ryan Ruzziconi said earlier this season that he wants the team to make a name for itself, and it looks like he wasn’t playing around.
While the boys were away in Hazel Park on Sept. 17, the Wildcats handed the Vikings a sour 8-0 loss.
In the singles games, Oxford won all four matches with 6-0, 6-0 scores. Though the doubles teams didn’t make the same feat, Oxford’s doubles matches did win each game in two sets.
The Friday before, the Wildcats beat L’anse Creuse High School North 6-2 at home. Senior Lauren Opalewski, junior Trevor Wallace and sophomore Gabe Smith brought home singles wins, earning Oxford three points. The doubles teams of sophomores Brenden Hamari and Nolan Kutchey; junior Dane VonAllmen and sophomore Silas VonAllmen; and junior Cameron Mumbrue and freshman Chasten Maie earned Oxford three points as well
Earlier in the week, the former Oakland Activities Association (OAA) blue division champs, the Harrison Hornets, took a hard loss to Oxford in Wildcat country on Wednesday, Sept. 12. The Wildcats took the match 6-2.
Opalewski,Wallace and junior Brock Heilig earned Oxford three points with singles wins. Doubles teams Hamari and Kutchey; Dane VonAllmen and Silas VonAllmen; as well as Mumbrue and Maier also put up three points on the board for Oxford.
Ruzziconi called the home victory a “great win” and was proud that the team defeated the former OAA blue division champs, who have since moved into the white division.
These wins put Oxford 10-3 overall. Ruzziconi noted this double digit winning record has been made by a team that is “just” three years old. The boys will take the court again on Sept. 20 at Ferndale.
