Oxford tennis rounded out the regular season on a high note, clinching a tight match against Farmington and taking third place in the OAA blue division tournament.
At the OAA blue tournament on Oct. 4, five of Oxford’s tennis players took home hardware during the team’s third place finish. Senior standout Lauren Opalewski started the day off strong with a gold medal in No. 1 Singles. In the matches she had to play to earn the medal, she won in just two sets. Opalewski finished her last season as a Wildcat with a 15-2 overall record.
In. No. 3 Singles, junior Trevor Wallace took home the silver medal, just losing to Avondale. Sophomore Gabe Smith also took home a singles medal, earning bronze in No. 4 Singles.
Oxford had two doubles teams leave the tournament with medals. No. 3 Doubles saw junior Dane VonAllmen and sophomore Silas VonAllmen walk away with gold medals. Wildcats freshman Chase Maier and junior Cameron Mumbrue left No. 4 Doubles with gold medals as well. Like Opalewski, Maier and Mumbrue finished the regular season with a 15-2 record.
These wins earned Oxford 43 points in the tournament, which landed them third place. The team finished the regular season as the third top OAA blue team.
Earlier in the week on Oct. 2, Oxford narrowly captured a win against Farmington 4-4 during its last home match of the season. Though both teams won four matches, Oxford led in winning sets 9-8, giving the Wildcats another for the win column.
Opalewski went home victorious from No. 1 Singles, which she took in two sets of 6-0 and 6-0. Junior Brock Heilig left No. 2 Singles with a win, which he earned in two sets of 6-2 and 6-1. Also leaving his singles match victorious,Wallace took down his opponent in No. 3 Singles in two sets with scores of 6-3 and 6-2.
In doubles, the No. 4 Doubles team of Maier and Mumbrue won their match in two sets of 7-5 and 6-0. Though Oxford’s No. 3 Doubles team of Dane VonAllmen and Silas VonAllmen lost their match 2-1, they were able to force a third set, which ultimately led to the Wildcats being able to walk away with a game win.
These games gave Oxford a 11-5 finish to the regular season. The boys will be taking on the MHSAA Regionals on Oct. 11, for which they’ll travel to Clarkston.
